This weekend is "Dad's Weekend" at the local university as well as a weekend for a home football game. Theoretically, this means the population of the town has temporarily swelled and there should be more people wandering around catching glimpses of the Nanowrimo flyers I had put up in the late morning. I did all of this myself, though. Nobody in the region took me up on my offer to help me put up flyers.
Two interesting incidents happened while I was putting up flyers--1) I bumped into a labmate at the town square. He asked me if I was putting flyers up to convince people to join my cult. Welllll...I suppose so. There are plenty of Nano fanatics. 2) I interrupted a couple making out in a little alcove on Main Street that was dedicated to flyers. Personally, I find public displays of affection sort of gross--but in this case, I was very amused at their annoyance. It's not every day that I can break people up with impunity.
I also distributed some flyers in a town that is 30 miles south. I'm hoping that will be a seed for people down there to form their own group. Last year, one participant from that town had posted on the forums lamenting why all the write-ins and parties were located here rather than there. I guess if anyone complains again, I'm going to suggest that they plan their own events. (I could go down there to lend support, but around November, the roads are going to be a little hairy.)
