"Easy definition for fantasy: If it ain't got elves, it ain't fantasy. Period."
Is this person being facetious?
Once again, people are redefining and pigeon-holing themselves simply because they want to fit somewhere. I think "genre" should be more of a guide than some hard and fast rules. Many innovative works actually blur the line between genres so I'd hate to see someone waste their energy pondering something left best to marketing people.
Anyways, I've started updating my links page with other weblogs of people participating in Nanowrimo. If anyone reading this has a Nanowrimo-related site of their own, send me an e-mail and I'll put you up.
I can definitely see eye-to-eye with you on this one. I've always understood genre as a somewhat vague classification of a book that essentially came down to how it would be shelved. I don't know how frequently our facetious elf-man visits the bookstore, but on any given shelf, there's quite a variety of books with many overlapping genres.
