The Nanowrimo forums can just suck you right in...
Anyways, I sort of glanced through a thread about "writing for the market" which degenerated into a flame war. I'm of the opinion that dissecting other people's reasons for writing is a completely pointless exercise. If you want to write for the market to put food on the table, that's fine with me. If others want to write just because they love it, also fine. There is no "right" reason. I just know my reason for writing, and that's all I care about.
YOUR reason for writing is all that matters in YOUR writing.
Usually, the ones who flame those who write for money/make a living at it are the ones who can't sell anything and earn a living by it anyway -- zero credentials, so who cares?
There's nothing wrong with writing for oneself and not making money or publishing. But that doesn't give one the right to judge those who can.
