I just got a Nanomail from an ML of a region that I'm affliated with (but not my "home" region) urging people to update their word count as frequently as possible so they can have info on their region challenges.
With the Nano website being as slow as it is, that was totally the wrong thing to say. I've been seeing a lot of participants on LiveJournal (and other weblogs) whining about how they can't get on the website so they can verify their word count.
We've had plenty of warning that the Nano servers were going to be sluggish to nonexistent at the beginning of November. This shouldn't be a surprise. But people are going to go to the website anyway to show off their shiny new word counts and excerpts(Look! I actually started writing a novel! Blah, blah, blah...), and that, predictably, will hit any website quite hard.
Nano is a month long thing. There will be plenty of time later to update your profile and whatnot. Just wait until the site runs more smoothly and then post. The point in this is NOT instant gratification, you know.
