I don't actually listen to anything while I'm writing even if music is playing. That's why I'm somewhat fuzzy as to what I've been listening to the previous years and completely clueless as to what sort of soundtrack might match up with my ideas.
I usually listen to instrumental works so I don't get too distracted. So my collection consists of a large number of movie soundtracks and classical music. I also have a fondness for electronic music, but this only works for particular types of writing--like fight scenes. (I do remember listening to The Crystal Method last year while writing one of the big fight scenes in my Nano novel.)
This year, I'm going to go for a dark, frentic feel--so there will be quite a bit of Vivaldi, Bach, and Philip Glass on the playlist. I might even include the soundtracks of various Dracula films even though I'm not doing vampires. However, I'm also tempted to throw in something totally random so I don't get too predictable.
