Genre? What's That?

This evening, I met up with another local Nanowrimo participant for some coffee and chitchat and she asked me what type of story I was doing this year. Basically, I replied, "Er, my profile says it's fantasy, but it's actually more of a historical murder mystery with bits of horror." I could have added pretty much every other genre in there as well--from sci-fi (there's a bit of clockpunk involved), to suspense (murder pretty much covers it), humor (gotta love that quicksand), and romance (or at least something's going on with the two main characters).

Genre is a really limiting concept. I know that when you're submitting a piece of fiction to an agent or an editor, you really have to tell them concisely what type of story you've written. Otherwise, they will think that your ideas are too scattered to attract a general audience--hence, being labeled as unmarketable. But if you're starting a story, I don't think this really matters. Just write what you want to write and worry about the labels later.
