Or at least a bit of what I know and an excess of artistic license. So I'm contemplating incorporating some of the specialized knowledge I've gained from graduate school into the story. Of course, if I'm to actually make this stuff readable, I'm going to simplify a lot of things and throw in a couple of colorful metaphors. Or I could just leave in all the technobabble so that only the die hard biology geeks would know what I'm talking about.
The idea I'm currently considering is a mix of space opera/horror/biopunk. It's not going to take place on Neptune, but relatively close to it. Borges' crimson hexagon will be in concrete form. There's a warped version of the small town that I had created from a previous idea. Space pirates might be mentioned.
There will be no FTL (faster than light) travel. Transportation will utilize a slightly more believable concept of physics. And aliens? Well, let's just say that what I have in mind has been done before (what hasn't?), but it will have an interesting twist that might have wine connoisseurs looking at their bottles with suspicion.
