Some Thoughts and Some Links

On multiple novels: Every year, I'm always somewhat flabbergasted that there are people planning to write two or more novels during one month. It's not against the rules, but it does seem overly ambitious and not quite in the purpose of Nano. If I could write 100,000 words in a month, I'd work on one complete novel and not split it up. I suppose I put this in the same category as people writing fan fiction or continuing works that they've already started. It's okay, but it's something that a purist would frown upon.

Is The Net Good For Writers? As usual, opinions are a mixed bag. There's a lot of dreck out there, yes, but the net is also a great equalizer. There are some good writers out there who are able to get some exposure by the internet when otherwise, they would be toiling in obscurity.

Gear up for NaNoWriMo with the Idea Box. I think I mentioned elsewhere that index cards are of no help to me, but this seems like something nifty that others might be able to utilize.

Sticky Note Stories. I just wanted to spotlight this particular blog because it consists of scans of post-it notes with story ideas. I might add scans of my own notes sometime later this month.

Lulu Titlescorer. Input your novel title and see how likely it may become a bestseller. The title I'm thinking of using scores around a 10% if I say it is "literal" and over 60% if I say it is "figurative". For previous Nano novel titles, I got:

Colophon: 63.7%
Foxfire: 63.7%
Beads of Horn Silver: 35.9%
The Reflecting Eye: 69.0%
The Twenty-fifth Hour: 69.0%
A Snake Among the Roses: 63.7%

NaNo for the New and the Insane. This is a guide to Nanowrimo by Lazette Gifford, perhaps one of the most prolific Nano participants I've seen on the forums. I haven't read it (yet), but others seem to find it useful. (Aside: Chris Baty also wrote No Plot? No Problem!, the official Nano book. I got it after several years of participation, so it wasn't quite as useful for me, but I would recommend it for newbies. Of course, no writing book is a substitute for just writing.)

Comments:
I like the title scorer. It just helped me choose between two title options.
